Match Update 2018
Seniors Match update.
The Seniors have had a very busy time recently, however results have not gone their way and they are looking for improvement towards the end of the season. Unfortunately they registered a 4.5 - 1.5 loss to Wollaton at home, a 4 and 3 defeat at Rushcliffe, a 3 - 3 half with The Leicestershire at home and suffered a 5 - 3 defeat at Luffenham Heath.
Seniors v Hinckley (away) Monday 16 July 2018
The heat continues to bear down and our lawns are turning to straw, but not at Hinckley golf course. Somehow it manages to retain some green on the fairways. Each hole provides a different challenge and you definitely need to plan your way around and course management is essential.
Longcliffe sent six pairs, but could have sent more looking at the reserve list. Each match was played in a competitive spirit, with at least two going down the long 18th par three, evenly balanced. So the final result was a fair reflection of our day, which went 3 to the hosts and 3 to Longcliffe.
Seniors v Erewash (Away) Thursday 12th July 2018
Erewash is a stern test of golf; fair but challenging. The fairways were brown with the ball running much further than expected. What a fabulous golf course and a joy to play. The usual comments about being bandits and wearing sombreros came out, but in a light hearted fashion. Each match was played competitively, with many running to the last few holes before the final result which was a win for Longcliffe 4.5 to 2.5.
One of the best features about playing in the Seniors is the new friends you make. Erewash is no exception as they went overboard to make us feel welcome. We look forwards to hosting them next year at Longcliffe
Seniors v Glen Gorse (away) Wednesday 20 June 2018
A strong westerly wind greeted us at this away venue, with the first five holes directly into the wind. The course runs roughly east to west and is believed to have the hardest finishing holes in the county. Local knowledge is a big advantage here. Each hole was played at the highest level with net birdies or pars required to win or scrape a half. Suffice to say our best efforts could only bring in 1.5 to 4.5 overall loss. Each game was played in a competitive spirit, with Phil Appleby winning the nearest the pin prize.
We eagerly await the return match next year at Longcliffe, when Glen will have to cope with our sloping fairways and difficult greens. Let's see if we can reverse the result!
Seniors v Kirby Muxloe Monday 18 June 2018
This was a re-arranged match due to inclement weather, and apart from the strong winds at the start the weather was just perfect. Our visitors commented on how well the course was set up, but many struggled with the contours of our greens. Each match was played in good spirits with the usual banter and ribbing, but this did not help our visitors who went down 7.5 to 0.5. Not quite a whitewash, but close!
Many thanks to the greens staff for continuing to make Longcliffe an enjoyable but challenging golf course, which everyone loves to play and the post match meal received excellent compliments yet again.
Seniors v Kibworth (away) Friday 16 June 2018
Longcliffe Seniors travelled to Kibworth for their annual match and although the sun shone, Longcliffe suffered a heavy defeat of 6 to 1.
Seniors v Beeston Fields Monday 11 June 2018
Another fabulous day of golf! Longcliffe is an away venue that is eagerly awaited by the seniors team from Beeston Fields, which included four single handicappers. Our visitors laid down the gauntlet in the early stages in a tight match enjoyed by both teams in a competitive spirit, with a final score of 4 and 4.
The course was in excellent condition ...... congratulations to Michael and his team...... and thanks to Paul, who as usual, supplied an excellent post match meal and the wine for nearest the pin on the 15th, which went to Beeston Fields.
We’re looking forwards to renewing friendships in August, for the return match at Beeston Fields.
Seniors v Northampton County Thursday 7 June 2018
Following a mix up with proposed dates, a depleted team was assembled to face our visitors from Northampton. The weather was perfect, the course in stunning condition which resulted in a most enjoyable and competitive match. With the course drying out care had to be taken on the approaches not to overrun the greens, but this did not detract from the challenge.
The meal was again to Pauls' very high standards and perfect for the occasion. The brandy soaked cherries in ice-cream were a winner!
With a number of teams winning on the last hole the overall score did not do justice to our competitors, with Longcliffe coming out victors 5 to 1. We’re all looking forwards to renewing friendships at Northampton County in September.
Seniors v Burton Thursday 24 May 2018
After a good start to the season with two wins, this was followed by two matches cancelled. Burton was next on the list but we suffered a loss by 4 and 3.
Over the years I have been at Longcliffe we have never beaten Burton both home or away. We have a away match with them in September to try to brake our duck.
Seniors v Longcliffe Ladies Monday 21 may 2018
The annual match between Longcliffe Ladies and the Seniors took place in the usual hard fought competitive spirit and as was thoroughly enjoyed by all, particularly the Ladies, who emerged victorious in a tight match, 4.5 to 3.5. A great day was had by all!!
Seniors v Erewash Thursday 5 April 2018
This was the second outing of the Seniors, with many new faces both in ours and the Erewash team. We caught a window of sunshine and very welcome it was too. Whilst the course was still damp in many places the ground staff should be praised on how well they have prepared it, under very difficult circumstances. The Erewash players also commented on how well the course was playing.
As the Erewash course has been closed for many weeks this may have reflected in the overall score which went 5.5 to 1.5 in Longcliffe's favour. Congratulations to all who played in a very congenial atmosphere. New friends were made all round.
Again, Paul and his staff did us proud with an excellent post match meal and for providing the nearest the pin prize, which went to Erewash.
Seniors v Lingdale Thursday 22 March 2018
Despite the snow still lying on parts of the course the course stood up well for our first match of the season against our local club. In a close match Longcliffe emerged the victors with a hard fought 4.5 to 3.5 win. Old friends met up and enjoyed catching up with old times over an excellent meal supplied by Paul and his team.
Seniors Christmas Competition and Dinner Friday 16 February 2018
After the disappointment of cancelling before Christmas the Seniors' rescheduled Competition and Dinner went ahead without anyone getting wet. A good time was had by all with an excellent meal of turkey and all the trimmings followed by Christmas pud laid on by Paul and his team.
Many thanks go to Geoff Allcock who presented a quiz on the rules of golf including incidents that have occurred at Longcliffe.
Congratulations go competition winners:
Ist. Mike Pearson, Graham Burgess, Rob Pretty and Paul Carroll.
2nd. Geoff Allcock, Dave Wilkinson, Norman Ellis and Arthur Plater.
3rd. Vernon Gubb, Norman Ward, Derek Bloor and Liam Biggs.
4th. Henry Hosking, Alan Webster. Bill Sutton and Steve Carvell.
Nearest to the pin: 1st - John Strodachs; 5th - Rob Pretty; 15th - Brian Armitage. Longest Drive - Rob Pretty.
Seniors Claret Jug and AGM
The Seniors season, and my term as Seniors Captain, were brought to end with the Annual Claret Jug competition followed by the AGM.The Claret Jug was won by Peter Brooks with a score of 39 pts.
I have had a great season, for which I thank all the seniors for supporting the matches and my away day (although it was rather wet). We did struggle on a few occasions to get a complete team at the last minute, hopefully next year with the adjustments we have made the situation will improve. We have adjusted the qualifying age for Seniors at Longcliffe to 55, which brings us in line with most other clubs. The annual subscription of just £10 is good value for money as this includes an end of season meal and Seniors get to visit some very attractive courses with no green fee.
Roy Longthorn was confirmed as Seniors Captain and John Strodachs as his Vice Captain for 2018. Secretary George Hay and Treasurer Frank Fay will continue for next year. I wish them all well.
Overall Results for the Season were: Played 21 Won 8 Lost 11 Halved 2 Cancelled (due to bad weather) 1
My thanks go to all Seniors and the Ladies section for supporting the Seniors Open and supporting the two competitions we play with the Ladies.
Seniors Match Update 2017
Seniors v Ruddington Thursday 5 October 2017
It started off pretty windy, however the final match of the season was eventually played in calm conditions with plenty of sun. We had to make some late replacements but managed to field a full team. The Ruddington team enjoyed the course, with many playing it for the first time. It was a close result with Longcliffe winning 4.5 to 3.5. A good result for the last match of the season!! As always the meal was much appreciated. Many thanks go to Paul and his staff for the excellent food and service throughout the season.
Seasons Results: Played 21 Won 8 Lost 11 Drew 2. It ends a reasonable season with just one home match lost and one away win at Erewash.
Seniors v Stoke Rochford (away) Monday 18 September 2017
Stoke Rochford was very picturesque, with great views of the hall, lake and river, and greens which were very tricky to read. This clearly distracted the Longcliffe team who lost the match by 5 matches to 3 .
Seniors V Burton on Trent (away) Monday 11 September 2017
Not the best of conditions for golf, which showed as the Longcliffe team went down at Burton by 6.5 matches to 1.5.
Seniors v Church Brampton (away) Monday 4 September 2017
The match started in very low cloud and light rainy conditions, but it quickly improved and the game finished in bright sunshine. The course was in immaculate condition (next year they are hosting one of the qualifying rounds for the Open ). The hospitality was good and the meal excellent as usual. The match was very close, going down to the last game, and resulted in a 4.5 to 3.5 win to Northamptonshire County.
Seniors v Luffenham Heath Thursday 31 August 2017
The match was completed before the rain showers started and the Luffenham Team thought that the course was excellent. The halfway house service provided by David Gray and his wife was much appreciated by all. As always the food was excellent, so thanks go again to Paul and his staff. Nearest to the pin competition on the 15th was won by our own Ian McAra, and the Longcliffe team won the match 5 matches to 3 giving us "revenge " from our defeat at Luffenham. Hoping for a strong finish to the season!!
Seniors v Beeston Fields Thursday 17 August 2017
In a very tight game Longcliffe Seniors emerged winners by 4.5 to 3.5.
Seniors v Luffenham Heath (away) Monday 7 August 2017
It is always a delight to go to Luffenham and our Seniors are keen to travel there to enjoy the course. The match was played in good conditions - no rain for a change. The course was in excellent condition, with greens and fairways showing that the course is not used much....it was millionaires golf!
The Luffenham team looked after us very well with an excellent meal to finish the day. The match was very close, with several matches going to last hole, however Longcliffe lost 5 matches to 3. We look forward to a better result at Longcliffe at the end of August!
Seniors v Rushcliffe Monday 31 July 2017
A convincing win 5-2.
Seniors v Wollaton Park (away) Monday 24 July 2107
The match started in very cloudy and windy conditions, however the course had been prepared for a PGA event and was in excellent condition. It is an enjoyable venue to play with the deer roaming the course adding pleasant dimension to the round. The weather improved, the conditions were fine for golf and as usual our hosts made us most welcome with an enjoyable meal at the end. Unfortunately Longcliffe lost 2.5 to 3.5, which ends our mini run of victories!!
Seniors v Hinckley Monday 17 July 2017
The weather was extremely hot, the course was in excellent condition and the ball running well, providing it was on the fairway.....! Holes 2 and 4 were used as extra starting points, which allowed matches to finish around the same time and therefore the after match meal was enjoyed earlier. The game was close with Longcliffe winning 3 1/2 to 2 1/2. Hopefully we can look forward to strong finish to the season!!
Seniors v Erewash (away) Thursday 13 July 2017
The Seniors got back into winning ways with a comprehensive 4-1/2 to 1-1/2 win away at Erewash. A special mention goes to Neil Harris who 'played exceptionally well' according to the Erewash team captain.....!
Seniors v Northants County Monday 19 June 2017
The match was played in extremely hot weather conditions, with some players having to come off the course due to the heat. The course was in good condition, with the ball running well in the dry weather. Our visitors really appreciated the course and the meal afterwards, but we all appreciated getting back in the club house for a much needed cool drink. The match score was an honourable half, 4 matches each!!
Seniors v The Leicestershire (away) Thursday 8 June 2017
The weather was rather cold, overcast and windy, however the course was excellent condition. The greens were fast and Longcliffe found it difficult to challenge the pins and the team lost 5 matches to 1. As usual the hospitality was very friendly and the meal was enjoyed by all.
Seniors v Kibworth Thursday 1 June 2017
The match was played in excellent conditions and the Kibworth team were full of praise for the course. Andy Wallace enjoyed his first outing for the Seniors and we look forward to him playing many more seniors' matches. The teams were evenly paired with most results being very close and the match result was a draw 4 matches each. Many thanks to Alan Webster he filled a slot at short notice. The visiting team praised our catering staff and the quality of the meal. Well done Paul.
Seniors v Burton Thursday 25 May 2017
The Seniors inconsistent start to the season continued with a 5 - 2 defeat at home to Burton. The match was played in the usual good spirits which continued in the clubhouse. Thanks to Paul and his team for the excellent after match meal!
Seniors v Lingdale (away) Thursday 18 May 2017
It was sunny and the course had dried out pretty well following the heavy rain on Wednesday. Lingdale took advantage and managed to win 5 1/2 - 2 1/2, although all the matches were close. Many thanks to Roy Longthorn and Trevor Todd who filled in for the Longcliffe team at the last minute.
Seniors v Kedleston (away) Friday 12 May 2017
Roy Longthorne and Dave Beswick were the only winners as the Seniors unfortunately went down 5 - 1 to better opponents at Kedleston.
Seniors v Charnwood (away) Friday 28 April 2017
The Seniors first away match at Charnwood resulted in a 4 1/2 to 1 1/2 defeat. Norman Ellis and Arthur Plater were our only winners. This was Roy Longthorne's first match as Vice Captain so he will try to do better next time!!
Seniors v Erewash Thursday 6 April 2017
Today we had our first match against Erewash at home. The weather was excellent. We nearly had to get the suntan cream out!! There were seven matches and Longcliffe won 5 1/2 to 1 1/2, so it turned out to be a good to start the season - long may it continue!
The course was in excellent condition and our visitors were impressed that the course was in such good order so early in the season. There was a slight delay at the start as one of the visitors had forgotten to put his clubs in the car and had to back for them..... another senior moment!!
As usual the food was excellent and our guests were very complementary about the catering presentation. Many thanks to Paul and his staff.
