Help for Heroes v Rothley  Friday 10 August 2018
The H4H team concluded there season with a disappointing 3-3 draw against Rothley.   Only once this season have we looked like the team that won the league in 2017.  A total of 23 different players represented Longcliffe this season.  On a more encouraging note nearly £2000 has been raised for aiding injured servicemen and women at Stanford Hall to experience golf in 2019.

Finally, Longcliffe did win one accolade in that Paul's after match meals were voted unanimously the best in the league.  Should any newer members with a handicap of 12 or below wish to represent the club in competitive match play fixtures in 2019 could they please make themselves known to Dave Gray.

League Team v Cosby (away)  Thursday 9 August 2018
Cosby was firm and bouncy and greens were good, however in a match that was tighter than the result reflects the team lost 6- 2.   The final match is against Hinckley at Longcliffe on Thursday 16 August and the lads would appreciate all the support you can muster!!

Combined Team v Lingdale Thursday 9 August 2018
In a tightly fought match with the course playing well, the honours were shared as both teams battled to a 3 - 3 draw.

Ladies Handicap League v The Leicestershire Thursday 9 August 2018
The very hot humid temperatures which we have had for weeks finally dropped to make conditions much more comfortable for the final match of the season.  It was a pleasant occasion and a close game which resulted in another win, this time by 2 - 1. Well done to Alison Seddon, Jane Ackling, Rachel Miller, Gilly Higgins, Sylvia Armson and Kate Hammond.

Seniors Match update.
The Seniors have had a very busy time recently, however results have not gone their way and they are looking for improvement towards the end of the season.  Unfortunately they registered a 4.5 - 1.5 loss to Wollaton at home, a  4 and 3 defeat at Rushcliffe, a 3 - 3 half with The Leicestershire at home and suffered a 5 - 3 defeat at Luffenham Heath.

Juniors v Kirby Muxloe
Unfortunately the Juniors lost 3 -1 away at Kirby.  Captain Oli Devonport was the only winner.  They are still in a reasonably strong position to win our division with 3 wins from 4 but it's no longer in their hands. They need to win the division to qualify for the county finals which would give them the opportunity to be county champions for a third year in a row.

Longcliffe Juniors are current County Champions and will represent the LRGU at Frilford Heath GC in the EGU finals.  Practice rounds are on Wednesday 15 August, competition days are Thursday and  Friday.  We wish Will Adamek, Chris Mee and Oli Devonport  every success!!

The Junior Section Support Day takes place Saturday 18 August.   We would much appreciate any donations we could use as raffle prizes.

Falcon Cup Saturday 4 August 2018
Conditions suited the lower handicappers as Graham Johnson returned a solid score of 41 points to win on count back from Vince Johnson, also with 41 points and the lowest gross score of level par 72 in a round which contained 4 birdies.  Joe Hudson came in third with 39.

Past Captains' v Lingdale Monday 30 July 2018
Longcliffe  Captains Society played the third of the year’s team matches against Lingdale Golf Club on Monday 30th July.  It was an extremely hot day but the Longcliffe team, consisting of 12 players, battled on to achieve an excellent 4-2 win.  The salad meal that followed was much appreciated by all.

Ladies Past Captain's Trophy / EG Medal / Putting Comp  Tuesday 31 July 2018
It was damp underfoot after the weekend's downpour, temporarily slowing the greens and reducing run...until the anticipated increase in temperatures return!  Congratulations go to Morag Harding who wins this year's Past Captain's Trophy with a net 77 (103-26).  This week's medal winner was Sylvia Armson with a great nett 73 (96-23) followed by Julie Bowler who to took runner's up position with a net 75 (84-9).  Finally in the putting competition, Rachel Miller won with 29 putts and Angie Lane close behind with 30.

Sylvia and Julie are both eligible for this year's Gold Medal.

St John's Cup  Wednesday 1 August 2018
Warm and sunny weather returned as Alan Clarke took the course by storm with an impressive nett 66 (89 - 23) with Neil Harris close behind on nett 68 (96 - 28) and Will Adamek in third place also with nett 68 (73 - 5).  Jon Siddons won the gross prize with a score of 2 under par 70.  Division winners were: Div 1 - Will Adamek, Div 2 - Ian Holland nett72 (85-13), Div 3 - Alan Clarke.

August Course Report is now on the Members Section notice board.

Juniors v The Leicestershire Sunday 29 July 2018
Longcliffe Juniors beat The Leicestershire Juniors by 2.5 - 1.5 at Longcliffe.  Wins for both Will Adamek and Captain Oli Devonport were then followed by a half point from 10 year old Ethan Zhang on his debut which  secured the win.  The team now have 3 wins from 3 matches and a victory in their final division game away against Kirby Muxloe on Monday 6th August will guarantee a place in the County Finals.

The Junior Section Support Day takes place Saturday 18 August.   We would much appreciate any donations we could use as raffle prizes.

Mixed vs Beeston (Away) - Sunday 8 July 2018
Another baking hot day meant everyone was loading up with water before taking on their fast fairways and challenging greens. Having beaten Beeston at home earlier in the season, we came away with a satisfying 4-4 draw; all agreed that their games had been equally friendly and competitive. A lovely meal followed with plenty of good humour.

England Golf's Senior Series
One of our newer members, Jane Ackling, played at Worksop Golf Club on 27th June as part of England Golf's Senior Series, which is a mixed competition for men over 55 years of age and women over 50 years of age.  It was a very hot day and the course was already very dry with plenty of run on the fairways and very slick speedy greens.  The winning score was 40 stableford points and Jane managed to score a very creditable 37 points which earned her 9th place out of a field of 112 players and a handicap cut to 17.  The top 10 players qualify for a place at the Senior Series finals event which is part of England Golf's finals week and this year takes place at Frilford Heath Golf Club in Oxfordshire in early August.  Jane is looking forward to taking her place in the final.

President's Week

The fine weather continued as President Arthur Plater enjoyed greeting members in the Halfway House to celebrate his week of Presidents' Competitions.

President's Day for Ladies
More baked fairways but damp, slower greens early on due to morning dew. Congratulations to Carol Lane who posted an incredible 45 points to take first place. Pat Mountford and Alison Seddon were second and third respectively with an equally impressive 40 points, followed by Gilly Higgins who secured another great score of 39 points.

Nearest the pin on the 1st, 5th and 15th were Viv Allcock, Jayne Harris and Sue Roberts, and Doreen Horspool was nearest the pin in 2 on the 18th.  Finally, well done to Suzanne Pretty who amassed 29 points off scratch to take the prize for Best Gross.

Back in the clubhouse, there were huge thanks and compliments for the drinks, sandwiches and homemade cakes kindly provided by Club President, Arthur Plater.

Well done and thanks to all who took - or played a - part in the day.

President's Midweek
Another fine day with the course looking great encouraged good scoring.  Clive Smith took the honours returning and impressive score of 43 points.  Alan Clarke was in the frame again in second place with 41 closely followed by Philip Appleby in third with 40 points.  The best gross score was Mark Lawrence with a fine 1 over par 73.  Nearest to the pin prizes were won by;  1st - Alan Clarke, 5th - Rob Hamilton, 15th - Dave Gould, and in 2 on 11th - Alan Gill.  Best Senior over 60 was Tony Cose with 39 points and best past Captain was Norman Ellis with 38.

Presidents Day
A full start sheet made for a long day for Arthur and helpers at the Halfway House.  The cooler conditions and a slightly softer course again encouraged good scoring with Nick Carter returning an excellent score of 41 points, closely followed by Kyle Bentley, also with 41 and dad, Steve Bentley with 40.   Best gross score was returned by Jon Siddons with a 4 under par score of 68.  Nearest to the pin prizes went to:  1st - Rob Smalley, 5th - Simon Whitaker ,15th - Andy Yeomans had a Hole in One!! and in 2 on 11th - Gaz Titterton.  Best Seniors prizes went to 55+ - Martin Downing, 65+ - Neil Harris, 75+ - Tony Watson and best Past Captain was Keith Hough.

Can you beat this...?  Geoff Allcock, Norman Ellis and Stuart Rackley all hit the green on the 5th hole and sunk their putts for three "twos".   That doesn't happen very often.....!

Congratulations go to all the weeks' prize winners and thanks go to Arthur for his hospitality, the welcome  refreshments and all who helped to make the week a success!!

Don't forget to get your tickets for President's Captain's and Pro's Night on Saturday 18 August!!

Jake Croshaw - County Boys Stroke Play Champion!!

Congratulations go to Jake Croshaw, who won the prestigious County Boys Stroke Play Tournament with impressive rounds of 73 and 71 at the Leicestershire.   Jake flies off to the USA this month to study and we thank him for representing Longcliffe so well and wish him every success in his studies!!

Ladies' Annual Away Day

The venue for the ladies' annual Away Day this year was Scraptoft Golf Club and 37 ladies had a great day.  The tropical conditions of the summer persisted but despite this the course was in good condition, better than that of some of the participants when they finished!

The prize for nearest the pin went to Christine Watson; Hazel Elias-Jones had the longest drive and Margaret Norris won the Glen Ollerhead Trophy for the best individual score with 40 points. The Travelling Trophy for the best Am-Am score was won by Margaret Norris, Pat Mountford, Bev Kaye and Joy Robinson with a magnificent 95 points, with Gilly Higgins, Julie Bowler, Christine Watson and Carol Lane in 2nd place with 86 points.

All in all - a grand day out!
