Longcliffe v Birstall Wednesday 17 August 2016
The last round of H4H matches proved critical in the final race for the trophy with three teams in with a chance. Unfortunately Longcliffe could not win the league, but their match with Birstall would prove pivotal to the final outcome. The first pairing of Jon Steel and Tom Adamek missed a few late chances and had to settle for a half. Andy West and Adam Brind were always behind and eventually lost two down to a strong Birstall pairing. Rich Selby and Sean Creeney enjoyed a nip and tuck struggle and emerged with a creditable half. Dave Gray and Neil Cockbill, despite spurning a few early chances, finished strongly with five birdies on the back nine to their opponents four to win three up. Harry Worden and Wayne Bown, despite losing 5 and 4, staged a late fight back to finally lose three down. Everything now depended on the final pairing of Kev Marshall and Neil Clapham and, not for the first time this season, they delivered overpowering their opponents by winning four up. The result finished 3-3, but on count back Longcliffe emerged winners with seven up to Birstall's five up, hence spurning Birstall's title ambitions.
Rothley needed to beat Kirby 4-2 to finish above them in the league. In yet another exciting encounter the result finished 3-3, however Rothley's count back win was not enough to prevent Kirby winning their second H4H title. £1200 was raised for Help for Heroes and Kirby received the trophy in a presentation at the Rothley Clubhouse
Longcliffe v Kirby Muxloe Thursday 4 August 2016
Longcliffe went into their penultimate match knowing only a win would keep their slim title hopes alive. The league's youngest pairing of Tom Adamek and Jake Croshaw went out first and delivered with a stunning 2 up win. Sadly the experienced pairings of Andy West and Vince Johnson, Sean Creeney and Don Murray both suffered reversals. Dave Gray and Neil Cockbill won comfortably 2 up. Debutant Rich Brind and Wayne Bown were overran by the Kirby Captain and his partner. However, the reliable final pairing of Kev Marshall and Neil Clapham won 3 up leaving the final match score at 3-3. In the H4H league drawn matches are decided on winning/losing margins which Kirby won comfortably securing their first away win of the season.
Longcliffe v Rothley (away) Wednesday 27 July 2016
The H4H Team travelled to Rothley seeking their first away win. Yet again the first pairing of Martin Downing and Tom Adamek got us off to a great start winning 5 up and completely overpowering the opposition. Surprisingly the second pairing of Adam Brind and Vince Johnson lost by a similar margin. The experienced Sean Creeney and Don Murray managed a fine 2 up win only to be followed by Harry Worden and Ian Preston suffering a 2 down defeat. Everything hinged on the last 2 matches. Dave Gray and Wayne Bown won the 15th to go 1 up but outstanding birdies on 16 and 17 from Rothley resulted in a 1 down defeat. The final match saw Kev Marshall and Neil Clapham involved in a titanic struggle before going down by the narrowest of margins 1 down. Although losing 4-2 yet again there was little difference between the teams.
Longcliffe v Birstall (away) Wednesday 20 July 2016
Top pair, Glenn Sherwood and Tom Adamek, were drawn against a five time county champion and realised they had a tough assignment early on when Tom eagled the par five 6th which was only good enough for a half. Yet they matched their opponents admirably and were unlucky to loose by the narrowest margin of one down. Our second pair of youngsters, Adam Brind and Jake Croshaw, also matched their vastly more experienced opponents unfortunately loosing at the last one down. The middle order failed to make headway against a very competent home team and it was left to the final pairing of Kev Marshall and Neil Clapham to save our blushes with a hard fought one up win. In the end Birstall finished worthy 5 - 1 winners.
Longcliffe v Kirby Muxloe (away) Wednesday 25 May 2016
In cold and windy conditions the pairings of Glen Sherwood and Paul Reed, Vince Johnson and Andy West secured hard fought wins but this was not enough to secure victory with the Longcliffe Team going down 4 - 2 against an accomplished Kirby Team on home soil.
Longcliffe v Rothley Wednesday 4 May 2016
Longcliffe started their 2016 campaign at home to Rothley. A fast start is important and Longcliffe got off to a flyer. Jon Steel and Paul Reed overpowered Rothley's top pair 5 up. David Hull and Harry Coe started with 5 birdies in the first 6 holes to take control of the second match eventually winning 4 up. Last year's unbeaten man, Sean Creeney, and rookie partner, Herbie Johnson, came up against a powerful pairing and lost 4 down. Dave Gray and Stuart Taylor lost a close match 2 down. Harry Worden and debutant Jordan Stephenson shared the spoils in the 5th match. Wrapping up Longcliffe's 31/2 - 2 1/2 victory were Kev Marshall and Neil Clapham with an impressive 5 up win.
