Mail on Sunday Classic

Longcliffe v Drayton Manor (away) Sunday 8 May 2016
The Longcliffe team found themselves away for the first time at Drayton Park.  The team of Rob Docherty, Andy Wilkinson, Dave Hull, James Pretty and Gary Titterton came up against a very strong scratch team which included one former professional.  The Drayton Park team had been undefeated on their home course for over 8 years and the Drayton Park record still remains intact.  None of our team were able to take their matches beyond the 16th green.  This was a  great effort on the part of the lads from Longcliffe team.

Longcliffe v Forest Hill Sunday 3 April 2016
The Men’s Mail on Sunday Classic team continued their impressive form with a 4:1 victory at home against Forest Hill.  Team regulars of Gary Titterton, James Pretty, Andy Wilkinson and Rob Docherty were joined by our Junior Captain, Jake Croshaw who had an excellent debut.  His opponent wasn’t quite sure what had hit him when he found himself 6 down after 6 holes.  With shot holes coming up, he did manage to rally a little but could not prevent Jake from running out a comfortable 4 and 2 winner.  Unfortunately for James, any luck that might have gone his way remained in the locker room and he narrowly lost 2 and 1.  However, with the remainder of the team in control of their games, a convincing victory was achieved.  The team who now go through to the last 256 in the competition (only another 7 rounds to the final!) and have an away tie against Drayton Park.

Longcliffe v Trent Lock Sunday 13 March 2016
A hastily rearranged second round match against Trent Lock Golf Club, due to course closure, suddenly gave the Longcliffe Team the home advantage which proved to be decisive.  With Harry Coe replacing Dave Hull in the team for this match, the substitution seemed to be inspired with Harry running out a comfortable 5&4 winner against his opponent.  Rob Docherty played as only Rob knows how and so when he sank a 20ft birdie putt on the 15th to secure a 4and 3 win he just exclaimed “Well that’s what you’re supposed to do isn’t it?”.

The remaining three games were more delicately balanced and with Gary Titterton on the 17th tee and 2 down it looked like a half point was the best he could achieve.  To be certain of victory the winning point would need to come from either Andy Wilkinson or James Pretty who both arrived at the 18th tee tied level in their matches.  With James going first and securing a solid par on the last, the point was his when his opponents ball caught the edge of the hole but stayed out.  Unaware of what was happening in front, Andy left his approach shot to the green short and on the right whilst his opponent found the right greenside bunker.  A cheeky chip onto the green from Andy saw the ball tracking towards the hole and in for a birdie to secure a fourth point for the team.  Meanwhile Gary was fighting back and as one would expect from a past club champion halved his game giving the team a very impressive 4½:½ win over Trent Lock.

Longcliffe v Willesley Sunday 14 February 2016
A strong team performance from Longcliffe saw them ease past Willesley Park in the first round of the Mail on Sunday National Golf Club Classic.  The match was finely balanced at the halfway point.  The team of James Pretty, Andy Wilkinson, Rob Docherty, David Hull and Gary Titterton all found an extra gear during the back nine and recorded convincing wins to produce an excellent 5 : 0 winning result.
