News Update Wednesday 28 June 2017
Gwyne Davis Cup Tuesday 27 June 2017
Despite the occasional shower, it is clear that Kerry Variava thrived in Tuesday's conditions, posting an exceptional nett 64 (89-25). For new member Jane Ackling (Welcome!) the decision to move from Charnwood has clearly suited her well as she shot nett 68 (86-18) to take the runners up position. A formidable day's golfing ladies, well done.
Mixed v Kibworth Sunday 25 June 2017
Many of the away team commented on how good the course looked and played on Sunday however, despite the on and off nature of the weather, the home team successfully held Kibworth to a great 4 1/2 - 3 1/2 win. Notables for the day were Anne Kilby and partner Andy Wilkinson who scared their playing partners into submission by the 5th (not actually true but sounds great!). Dennis Wilcockson and Irene Moody also had excellent rounds with their respective partners. As ever, a fantastic meal concluded a great days golf in good company.
Dixon/Armstrong Saturday 24 June 2017
The blustery wind made the course tricky with the standard scratch at 74, but this caused Adam Brind no problems as he rose to the challenge to win the Dixon Trophy with an excellent nett 67 (73-6). Pete Black came a close second with 68 (76-8) on count back from Andrew Tyson, also on 68 (78-10). The Armstrong Cup was won by Paul Farmer, who scored 70 (89-19), with Captain Dave Vosper in second place with 72 (92-20) on count back from David Wordsworth also with 72 (87-15). The gross prize went to Gary Titterton with a fine level par round of 72. Paul Farmer won Division 1 and Dave Vosper won Division 2.

Ladies Ping Betterball Stableford Tuesday 20 June 2017
An excellent result for Gill Youngs and Helen Smith who amassed 43 points to win in warm, overcast conditions. Well done also to runners up Pat Gubb and Chris Sharp who delivered 42 points having beaten Ali Groom and Rachel Miller on the back nine by one. All fingers crossed for qualification to the national finals ladies. Good Luck!
Seniors v Northants County Monday 19 June 2017
The match was played in extremely hot weather conditions, with some players having to come off the course due to the heat. The course was in good condition, with the ball running well in the dry weather. Our visitors really appreciated the course and the meal afterwards, but we all appreciated getting back in the club house for a much needed cool drink. The match score was an honourable half, 4 matches each!!
Captain's Away Weekend
More than 70 Longcliffe members accompanied Captain Dave Vosper to Heythrop Hall in Oxfordshire on the annual Captain's Away Weekend. The hotel, food and service were first class and the course was a good test, but was spoiled by the poor quality of the greens which had been recently spiked and dressed with 'mountains' of sand. Some golfers managed to build sandcastles to putt through.....!! There were amusing moments when Rob Smalley disappeared into the rough and played his recovery shot from a Jesuit graveyard and Colin Whittingham was penalised for grounding his club in a hazard.....sand on the greens....!! The evening dinner and entertainment were very well received with amusing anecdotes from guest speaker, Welsh comedian Mike Lewis.
Many thanks go to Paul Carroll, Martin French and Andy DeWet for their sterling work in organising the competitions and acting as starters. A good time was had by all. Looking forward to next year....!!
