64 intrepid golfers assembled at Wychwood Park to do battle on what is an excellent course in the East Cheshire Countryside. They were well prepared, and they had to be, as waterproofs, umbrellas and wellies became essential items as the heavens opened and the rain poured down depositing 12 mm of rain in under 12 hours, but did it dampen their spirits, no, only their kit!
The Am Am format, in finely balanced teams of 4, with 2 to count produced some very respectable scores given the wet conditions. Keith Hough, Andy Wilkinson, Matt Tyler and Bill McKeown took first prize with a brilliant 83. Dave Gray, Joe Hudson, Rob Brechin and Paul Carroll followed closely in second place with a dogged 81 whilst Rich Wells, Hatj, Ian Russell and Brian Armitage came third with 80 points.
The winners of the nearest to the pin competitions on the 4 par 3's, with the pins placed in some very challenging positions on very tricky greens, were James Pretty, Paul Dawson, Rob Brechin and Matt Tyler. They each received prizes kindly donated by Paul Price and David Mee.
After drying out, a hearty meal and the prize giving we all retired to the bar to relax, drink, watch the US Open, play pool and prepare ourselves for the following day's challenge.
Day 2 started as Day 1 had finished with more rain. However, the rain eased, the sun came out and the later starters almost had a rain free round. In a smaller field the winners of the Am Am were Dave “Windows” Wilkinson, Victor Patino, Jon Odams and Paul Graveling with a great score of 83. Matt Tyler, Ian Preston, Andy De Wet and our Captain, Dave Wilkinson came second with 81 and Andy Wilkinson, Harry Coe, Mark Harrison and David Gould were third with 75 points. Congratulations to Rob Smalley who was the only golfer to shoot under his handicap (37 points) over the whole weekend.
Nearest to the pin prize winners were Ian Russell, Rob Smalley, Mark Harrison and Chris Frith. Over the two days the individual aggregate stableford points score winners were Harry Coe with 67 points; Ian Preston with 64 points; Matt Tyler with 62 points; Paul Graveling and Andy Wilkinson tied for 4th place with 61 points each. Captain Dave Wilkinson presented Harry Coe with First Prize - a Callaway Big Bertha Driver.
Wychwood Park proved to be the exceptional test of golf that was expected with an average singles stableford score of 25.4 being achieved over the weekend. In addition, with each golfer losing on average four balls per round that equates to over 400 balls being left deposited around the Cheshire countryside. That’s quite a bit of litter!
Although it was a pretty damp weekend, spirits were not dampened too much, and thanks go to Captain Dave Wilkinson and all those who helped to make the weekend run so smoothly!!
