More than 70 Longcliffe members accompanied Captain Dave Vosper to Heythrop Hall in Oxfordshire on the annual Captain's Away Weekend. The hotel, food and service were first class and the course was a good test, but was spoiled by the poor quality of the greens which had been recently spiked and dressed with 'mountains' of sand. Some golfers managed to build sandcastles to putt through.....!! There were amusing moments when Rob Smalley disappeared into the rough and played his recovery shot from a Jesuit graveyard and Colin Whittingham was penalised for grounding his club in a hazard.....sand on the greens....!! The evening dinner and entertainment were very well received with amusing anecdotes from guest speaker, Welsh comedian Mike Lewis.
Many thanks go to Paul Carroll, Martin French and Andy DeWet for their sterling work in organising the competitions and acting as starters. A good time was had by all. Looking forward to next year....!!
